Indonesia Signals Openness to Chinese Investment, Calls for Deeper Ties
Indonesia's president welcomes Chinese investment and deeper cooperation during a meeting with top Chinese officials in Jakarta.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his country's openness to Chinese investment and business, pledging to maintain a supportive environment for Chinese companies. During a meeting in Jakarta on Friday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun, Prabowo also voiced opposition to what he described as ill-intentioned instigation and hype targeting bilateral relations.
The meeting, held at the president's official residence, was part of ongoing high-level engagement between the two nations. Prabowo praised the role of the Indonesia-China Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism and the 2+2 dialogue mechanism, which cover foreign and defense policy coordination.
Prabowo highlighted China's achievements in poverty alleviation, economic growth, and technological and military development, describing them as a model for Global South countries. He noted that China's approach of mutual respect has provided Indonesia with confidence and support.
Looking ahead, the president expressed interest in attending the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen in November to further strengthen strategic communication with Beijing. He said Indonesia seeks deeper cooperation across political, economic, and scientific fields.
In response, Wang Yi acknowledged Indonesia's progress under Prabowo's leadership and emphasized the complementary strengths of the two countries. He described China as a reliable, long-term partner in Indonesia's development and expressed willingness to help the country convert its natural resources into development momentum, accelerating industrialization and modernization.
Wang also stressed the importance of openness over isolation, arguing that cooperation is essential in a turbulent global environment. He called for stronger solidarity between China and Indonesia to safeguard common interests and set an example for other developing nations.
Both sides agreed to implement the outcomes of recent bilateral mechanisms and advance cooperation in politics, economy, energy, minerals, and security. Wang added that such collaboration would contribute to regional peace and stability while supporting the development goals of both nations.
