Indonesia and China Deepen Defense Ties, Pledge Energy and Food Security Cooperation
Indonesia and China held high-level talks in Jakarta, agreeing to boost defense cooperation, enhance food and energy security, and strengthen economic ties.
Senior ministers from Indonesia and China convened in Jakarta on Friday for high-level talks focused on expanding defense collaboration and reinforcing food and energy security. The meetings marked a significant step in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the discussions aimed to ensure the newly established bilateral dialogue yields tangible progress across key areas of cooperation, including political, economic, security, maritime, and people-to-people relations. He emphasized the importance of facilitating trade and expanding market access for Indonesian commodities.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the agreement to better coordinate on development and security priorities, framing the partnership as a safeguard for the modernization of both countries. Wang also stressed the importance of opposing unilateral bullying and power politics, while advocating for the protection of developing nations' interests.
In a separate meeting, the defense ministers of both countries, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Dong Jun, discussed enhancing defense cooperation. This includes material collaboration, personnel development, and strengthening the defense industries of both nations. Sjamsoeddin extended an invitation for Chinese armed forces to participate in joint exercises, such as the Heping Garuda exercise.
Indonesia's economic relationship with China has grown substantially, with trade reaching approximately $167 billion in 2025. China is now Indonesia's largest trading partner and has invested heavily in major infrastructure projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and the Cirata floating solar power project. Despite some disagreements over project pricing and timelines, China remains committed to these initiatives under its Belt and Road initiative.
