Indonesia Ramps Up Enforcement as Borneo Fires Blanket Region in Haze

Indonesia intensifies law enforcement as Borneo fires spread haze to Malaysia, with thousands of hotspots and hundreds of thousands of hectares burned.

Indonesian authorities have intensified law enforcement efforts as forest and peatland fires across Borneo intensify, sending thick haze into neighboring Malaysia, officials confirmed on Friday.

More than 11,900 hotspots were detected nationwide on Friday, with West and Central Kalimantan recording the highest concentrations. So far this year, approximately 285,000 hectares (704,000 acres) have burned — an area nearly the size of Rhode Island.

In Central Kalimantan, police have detained 12 suspects linked to alleged arson and illegal land clearing, signaling a tougher stance against those responsible for igniting the fires.

The dense smoke has severely reduced visibility, in some areas to as little as 1 to 10 meters, disrupting transportation and daily routines. Residents have reported breathing difficulties and growing concern over the health impacts of the prolonged haze.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the fires show no immediate signs of abating, with the haze expected to persist in the region.
