Indonesia's Parliament Approves Destry Damayanti as First Woman Central Bank Chief

Indonesia's parliament on Tuesday approved Destry Damayanti as the next governor of Bank Indonesia, making her the first woman to lead the country's central bank. The 62-year-old economist was the sole nominee for the position after Governor Perry Warjiyo resigned unexpectedly in July, midway through his second term.

Lawmakers confirmed her nomination during a plenary session, following a recommendation from parliament's financial committee. The committee had endorsed her candidacy last week after conducting a 'fit-and-proper' test. President Prabowo Subianto is now expected to issue a decree formally appointing her to the role.

Destry takes charge at a critical moment for Southeast Asia's largest economy. Investors have expressed concerns over fiscal management, stock market transparency, and the autonomy of the central bank amid the government's push to accelerate growth. During her vetting last week, she acknowledged the country faced a 'highly complex situation' and stressed the need for stronger coordination among institutions, while assuring that cooperation with state agencies would not compromise Bank Indonesia's independence.

She has also stated that the central bank would support economic growth and job creation while maintaining stability in the financial system and the rupiah. Analysts view Destry, a Cornell-educated economist who has served as senior deputy governor since 2019, as a continuity candidate who can maintain monetary policy stability while working effectively with the Prabowo administration.
