Greensand project to become EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site

INEOS's Greensand project will start storing CO2 beneath the Danish North Sea on Friday, the first full-scale such facility in the EU.

The European Union's first full-scale carbon dioxide storage facility is set to begin operations on Friday, with the British company INEOS confirming that its Greensand project will bury emissions beneath the Danish North Sea.

In its initial phase, Greensand will be able to store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. The company said the project is designed to scale up to between 4 million and 8 million tonnes annually once it reaches full capacity.

The storage process involves CO2 captured from Danish biomethane plants. The gas will be liquefied, transported by truck to the Port of Esbjerg, and then shipped to the depleted Nini West oil field, located roughly 250 kilometres offshore. There, it will be injected about 1,800 metres below the seabed.

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen described the project as a model for the continent's industrial transition. "We set out a path for European industries: to continue their transition to a low-carbon future, while maintaining production, investments, and employment in our continent. And we open a new front in the existential fight against climate change," he said.

The launch places the EU at the forefront of large-scale carbon capture and storage, though it is not the first in Europe overall. Norway's Northern Lights project began storing CO2 in August 2025, but Norway is not a member of the European Union.
