INL accuses IUML of silence as Vande Mataram row deepens in Kerala
INL criticises IUML for not opposing the singing of full Vande Mataram at state events, alleging saffronisation.
The Indian National League (INL) has sharply criticised the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for its silence over the recent singing of the full version of Vande Mataram at official functions in Kerala. The INL has alleged that the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) is implementing a cultural agenda favoured by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In a statement issued on Monday, INL State general secretary Kasim Irikkur claimed that Kerala was being 'saffronised' due to the inaction of the IUML leadership. He alleged that the Lok Bhavan and the state bureaucracy, which he described as sympathetic to the RSS, were pleased with the government's actions.
Mr. Irikkur specifically pointed to the Onam week celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram and the inauguration of the Uthrattathi Vallamkali at Aranmula. He claimed that Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Congress ministers participated in singing the full version of the song at these events.
The criticism follows Cultural Affairs Minister P.C. Vishnunadh's justification of the decision. The Minister had stated that singing the full version was necessary to avoid a breach of protocol, as Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan was the chief guest at the function.
The INL leader expressed disappointment that the IUML has not protested against these developments, accusing the party of remaining indifferent and paralysed on the issue.
