Iran to Present Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz, Official Says
Iran's top security official says Tehran is drafting conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with ending the regional war among the key demands.
Iran is preparing a formal list of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council. The move follows requests from mediators for Tehran to spell out its terms.
Rezaei said ending the regional war is among the conditions. He also confirmed that Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on a shipping corridor through the strait, with portions of the route falling within each country's territorial waters.
Speaking through an interpreter in an interview with Al Manar TV, Rezaei indicated that vessels would use a designated central channel once the United States meets Iran's demands.
A senior source said on Wednesday that Iran and Oman are still refining the details of their agreement on the waterway. This came after Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that the two nations had agreed on how to share control of the strait and its revenues.
A Guards spokesperson stated that Iran will not allow the strait to reopen unless Washington lifts what Tehran calls a blockade of Iranian ports, removes sanctions, and pays compensation.
Before the conflict began in February, the strait handled roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Maritime traffic through the waterway has largely halted since then. Ceasefire agreements announced by Washington and Tehran in April and June were meant to restore shipping but failed to hold.
