Iran Signals Diplomacy Possible If US Drops Pressure Tactics
Iran's FM says diplomacy can resume if the US abandons pressure and builds trust, after Qatar talks.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has indicated that a return to meaningful diplomacy with the United States remains possible, but only if Washington shifts its approach. In a statement posted on X, Araqchi said reviving the diplomatic track was "not impossible," though it would depend on the US recognising that pressure tactics are ineffective.
Araqchi's remarks followed what he described as "creative discussions" with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The talks appear to have focused on the strained state of US-Iran relations and potential pathways to de-escalation.
The Iranian minister outlined specific conditions for progress, urging Washington to build trust, engage in respectful dialogue, acknowledge Iran's rights, and honour its commitments. His comments suggest Tehran is open to engagement but remains firm on the need for a fundamental change in US behaviour.
These statements come amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, with no clear timeline for formal negotiations. Araqchi's tone, however, leaves room for cautious optimism, framing the current impasse as a matter of US policy choices rather than an insurmountable barrier.
