Iran's parliament speaker rejects US 'economic D-Day' sanctions warning

Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has dismissed fresh US sanctions threats as "nonsense," asserting that Washington no longer possesses the economic clout to dictate terms to other nations.

The rebuke came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new wave of sanctions targeting Iran's financial networks. Bessent described the measures as an "economic D-Day," vowing to sever every economic lifeline sustaining the country.

The US Treasury Department stated the sanctions would focus on five critical sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The department framed the move as the start of a sustained campaign to close all financial resources supporting Iran, warning that any entity facilitating money laundering or sanctions evasion on Tehran's behalf would be cut off from the US financial system.

In response, Ghalibaf took to social media to state that Iran's trading partners have made it clear they do not take Washington's declarations into account. He argued that the US threats carry little weight in the international community, as many countries continue to engage with Tehran despite American pressure.
