A senior Iranian security official has warned that any "malicious" act by the United States would draw a severe response targeting American military and economic interests across West Asia.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
Rezaei said such a response would be "etched in history," while reiterating Tehran's deep distrust of Washington, which he accused of repeatedly betraying diplomacy and negotiation efforts.
He also stated that Iran would only reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the United States takes practical steps to meet Tehran's conditions.
The Qatari prime minister affirmed his country's commitment to cooperate with Iran, citing shared regional responsibilities.
The comments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with the strategic waterway at the centre of ongoing disputes.
