Iran Warns South Korea Against Joining Gulf Operations
Iran cautioned South Korea on Monday that any military participation in Gulf or Strait of Hormuz operations would be seen as backing US aggression, with serious consequences.
Iran has issued a direct warning to South Korea over any potential military involvement in the Gulf region. In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Monday, a spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry said that any participation or presence by South Korean forces in operations in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz would be interpreted by Tehran as support for what it termed US "aggression."
The spokesperson added that such a move would carry "serious consequences" for Seoul. The remarks signal heightened Iranian sensitivity to any foreign naval or military activity near its strategic maritime chokepoint, through which a significant share of global oil shipments pass.
The warning comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, where the United States has maintained a military presence and has coordinated with allies on maritime security missions. South Korea, a key US ally in Asia, has not announced any specific plans to deploy forces to the Gulf, but Tehran's statement appears aimed at preempting any such decision.
Iran's message underscores the delicate diplomatic position of countries that maintain close security ties with Washington while also engaging economically with Tehran. The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint, and any escalation involving additional foreign forces could further complicate the security landscape in the region.
