A large fire broke out at a fuel depot along the Irbil-Kirkuk road in northern Iraq on Wednesday night, sending flames high into the sky and drawing a sustained response from local fire crews.
According to a spokesperson for the Irbil Civil Defense, fuel tankers parked inside the depot were the first to catch fire. The blaze spread rapidly through the facility, and the presence of large quantities of combustible fuel made the operation to bring it under control especially difficult.
Footage from the scene showed firefighters working close to the flames, with the fire illuminating the surrounding area well into the night. Crews were seen moving around the burning tankers as they attempted to contain the spread.
Authorities said no casualties had been reported. The cause of the fire had not yet been determined, and no further details on the extent of the damage were immediately available.
The depot sits on a key route linking Irbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, with the northern oil city of Kirkuk, an area where fuel storage and transport infrastructure is common.
