Herzog cautions UK against settlement sanctions, calls for dialogue
Israeli President Isaac Herzog cautioned the UK against imposing trade sanctions on West Bank settlements, calling such a move a 'grave miscalculation' that would harm Palestinians and undermine security.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has issued a direct warning to the United Kingdom ahead of an anticipated announcement of trade sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Speaking in Jerusalem on Tuesday, Herzog said that if London proceeds with the measures, and other nations follow suit, the decision would prove to be a "grave miscalculation" and would fall "on the wrong side of history."
The comments come as the UK is expected to unveil restrictions on goods produced in settlements in the area referred to by Israel as Judea and Samaria. Herzog framed the potential move as an unwarranted intervention in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state.
"In the current context, it would be a gross interference in the democratic elections of a sovereign nation," he stated.
The president argued that such sanctions would be counterproductive, ultimately harming Palestinian communities by eliminating business opportunities and employment. He added that the measures would undermine the interests and national security of freedom-loving nations.
"Sanctions are not a solution. Dialogue is," Herzog asserted, appealing directly to foreign governments to "step away from the dead-end of sanctions and boycotts" and instead pursue constructive engagement and cooperation.
The warning was delivered against the backdrop of the E1 area in the West Bank, a region where settlement expansion and the presence of Bedouin communities remain points of contention.
