Israeli troops fire on Palestinians in West Bank village, injuring one man

Israeli soldiers opened fire on a group of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, wounding one man, in an incident captured on video recorded by an eyewitness.

The footage, filmed in the village of Faqqua, shows troops firing more than a dozen rounds towards the men, who did not appear to pose a threat. As the shots ring out, several of those present lift the injured man and carry him away from the soldiers before laying him on the ground and tying a tourniquet around his leg to slow the bleeding. Voices on the recording call for a car to take him away.

Mahmoud Shahin, a resident of Faqqua, said villagers had rushed to the area after hearing that Israeli settlers had arrived with a flock of sheep. According to Shahin, soldiers reached the scene and began firing into the air before turning their weapons towards the residents. He said the wounded man was being operated on at a hospital in Jenin.

Israel's military said the video was authentic. It confirmed that its forces had fired towards the Palestinians and that one man was injured, adding that commanders would review the incident.

Settler violence in the West Bank, which Israel seized in the 1967 Mideast war, has risen sharply under the ultranationalist government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. That government regards the territory as the biblical and historical homeland of the Jewish people, while Palestinians seek it as part of a future state.
