ISRO's 'Naughty Boy' Rocket Returns for Critical EOS-05 Mission

ISRO's GSLV-F17 rocket, nicknamed 'Naughty Boy', is set to launch EOS-05, India's first geosynchronous imaging satellite, early Friday from Sriharikota.

In the early hours of September 4, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will attempt a significant comeback with the launch of its GSLV-F17 rocket carrying the EOS-05 satellite. The mission, scheduled for 2:55 AM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, aims to place India's first imaging satellite into a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometers above Earth.

This launch comes at a critical juncture for ISRO, following consecutive failures of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in 2025 and 2026. While the PSLV remains grounded for investigation, the GSLV Mk II, which uses a different propulsion system, is cleared for flight. The distinction is crucial, as the issues affecting the PSLV are not linked to the GSLV's design.

The GSLV has historically been a challenging vehicle for ISRO, earning the nickname 'Naughty Boy' due to its unpredictable performance in its early years. Of its first 18 flights, six did not achieve full success. However, the rocket's significance lies in its indigenous cryogenic upper stage, a technology developed after international restrictions blocked India from acquiring it from Russia in the 1990s.

EOS-05 represents a second chance for ISRO to place a geosynchronous imaging satellite in orbit, following the failure of a similar mission (EOS-03) in August 2021 due to a cryogenic stage malfunction. The new satellite, weighing approximately 2,367 kilograms, will provide continuous Earth observation from a fixed vantage point over India, offering persistent monitoring for weather systems, disaster response, and border surveillance.

The GSLV-F17, standing 51.7 meters tall and weighing 420.5 tonnes, will lift off from the Second Launch Pad. The mission's success is seen as vital for restoring confidence in ISRO's capabilities and demonstrating the reliability of its indigenous cryogenic technology.
