
ISRO's GSLV-F17 Successfully Places EOS-05, India's First Geo-Imaging Satellite, in Orbit
ISRO's GSLV-F17 launched EOS-05, India's first dedicated Earth observation satellite to geosynchronous orbit, on Friday, boosting real-time monitoring capabilities.
In a significant boost for India's space programme, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its GSLV-F17 rocket early Friday morning, carrying the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite. This was ISRO's first launch since January and a crucial test after a string of recent setbacks.
The EOS-05 is India's first dedicated imaging satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 km from Earth. From this vantage point, the satellite will remain stationary relative to the ground, allowing it to maintain a constant watch over the Indian subcontinent and provide real-time imaging services.
Designed for a 10-year mission life, the satellite will enable frequent imaging of large areas, supporting applications such as disaster monitoring, agriculture and forestry tracking, and defence surveillance. This contrasts with existing Earth observation satellites in lower orbits, which only capture periodic imagery as they circle the planet.
About 18 minutes after liftoff, the GSLV-F17 injected the 2,360-kg satellite—the heaviest payload ever carried by a GSLV—into a transfer orbit at an altitude exceeding 190 km. Over the coming days, the satellite will perform a series of orbit-raising manoeuvres to reach its final geosynchronous slot.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO, calling the launch "yet another outstanding achievement" and a reflection of the growing capabilities of India's space sector. He also highlighted the strengthening partnership between ISRO and Indian industry.
ISRO Chairman V Narayanan described the mission as a "great achievement" and the first Earth observation satellite to be placed on a geo-platform for national activities. He confirmed that all satellite systems were functioning normally and that the solar panels had been deployed.
The launch comes as a relief for ISRO, which has faced one of its most difficult phases in recent years. Three of six missions in 2025 and 2026 failed to place satellites in their intended orbits due to anomalies. The GSLV rocket, once nicknamed the 'naughty boy' due to cryogenic engine issues, had been grounded for additional checks since February. However, with this successful flight, scientists had earlier said the vehicle had become 'disciplined' and a 'smart boy'.
Industry experts, including Lt General A K Bhatt (retd) of the Indian Space Association, noted that the geosynchronous imaging capability will enable persistent, high-frequency observation of large regions, which is critical for tracking weather systems, floods, and forest fires, as well as for strengthening situational awareness across land and maritime domains. He also underscored the growing role of India's private space industry in such national missions.
