Italian NATO Jet Downs Drone Over Latvia Amid Baltic Incursions

An Italian Eurofighter jet operating under NATO command shot down an unidentified drone that entered Latvian airspace on Friday, according to the defence alliance and Latvian authorities. The incident occurred as Ukrainian forces launched attacks on Russian ports near the Baltic region.

Latvian soldiers were deployed to a wooded area near the village of Rugaji, roughly 35 kilometres from the Russian border, to search for debris from the downed aircraft. The military said the drone's origin could not yet be confirmed as the search was still in its early stages.

NATO scrambled two Italian Eurofighters from Lithuania and two Turkish F-16s from Estonia after the drone was detected over Latvian territory. One of the Eurofighters identified and engaged the target, bringing it down. An investigation is ongoing, and NATO stated it remains in close contact with Latvian officials.

The incident is part of a recent pattern of drone incursions into Baltic airspace, which has been linked to spillover from the Ukraine war. Previous incidents include a Romanian F-16 downing a drone in Estonia in May and a French Rafale intercepting another over Latvia in June. Latvian officials have attributed some of these events to Russian electronic warfare activities that disrupt drone navigation.

As a precaution, Finland temporarily restricted aviation and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland on Friday morning. The search for the wreckage is being complicated by the challenging terrain, which includes dense forests and bogs, according to a Latvian military commander involved in the operation.
