Jaishankar Meets Counterparts at UNGA, Discusses Ukraine, Gulf and UNSC Reform
S Jaishankar held bilateral meetings at the 81st UN General Assembly, discussing the Ukraine and Gulf crises, UNSC reform and stronger economic ties.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a series of bilateral meetings in New York on the margins of the high-level United Nations General Assembly session, discussing regional and global developments with several of his counterparts.
Jaishankar, who arrived in the city on Sunday to lead the Indian delegation to the 81st UNGA session, began his engagements on Monday with a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
In a social media post, he said the two sides discussed regional and global issues, specifically the Ukraine and Gulf crises, and exchanged views on multilateral matters, including reform of the UN Security Council. He noted that regular meetings and telephone conversations help sustain the momentum of the India-France Special Global Strategic Partnership.
Later, after talks with Ecuador Foreign Minister Roberto Kury, Jaishankar said the discussions covered ways to strengthen economic ties, including in energy and pharmaceuticals, as well as mobility, training of personnel, development partnership and cooperation in multilateral fora such as the United Nations.
His meeting with Slovakia Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar covered the bilateral agenda and ways to deepen multilateral cooperation.
Jaishankar also described his first meeting with Hungary's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban as a good one, saying the two sides resolved to work together to deepen ties and advance the bilateral strategic partnership.
The minister is scheduled to address world leaders at the General Debate from the UNGA podium on September 26.
