Butler rally shooting survivor James Copenhaver dies at 76

James Copenhaver, one of three people shot during the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. He was 76.

Copenhaver died on Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network's West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a statement from the Allegheny County medical examiner cited in local media accounts. His lawyer, Joseph Feldman, said in a statement released on behalf of the family that Copenhaver was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death. The statement did not say whether his death was directly connected to the injuries he sustained at the rally.

Copenhaver was seated in the bleachers on 13 July 2024 when a 20-year-old gunman fired from a nearby rooftop, grazing Trump's right ear. He was struck in the arm and the abdomen, injuries that left him with lasting damage and forced him to walk with a cane.

Two other attendees were also hit. David Dutch survived, while Corey Comperatore was killed after shielding his family from the gunfire.

In June, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne Copenhaver, sued the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security had "utterly failed" to provide adequate security at the rally. The lawsuit said his wounds required multiple surgeries, including a transection of his colon, and left him with lingering kidney damage and other complications, including a loss of feeling in one leg. It described the injuries as "debilitating, grievous, permanent and life altering."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his death.
