Omar Abdullah Moves Statehood Resolution in J&K Assembly, BJP MLAs Protest
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the Assembly demanding immediate restoration of full Statehood, prompting protests from BJP legislators.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the Assembly on Friday seeking the immediate restoration of full Statehood to the Union Territory. The resolution states that, in addition to the resolutions passed by the House on June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024, the Assembly calls upon the Government of India to grant full Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, and resolves that the resolution be forwarded to the Centre.
The move draws on a longer legislative record in the erstwhile State. On June 26, 2000, a National Conference-led government headed by Farooq Abdullah passed a resolution seeking the restoration of greater autonomy as it existed before August 9, 1953. More recently, on November 6, 2024, the House passed a resolution seeking the restoration of special status.
Speaking on the floor, the Chief Minister said the "Modi promise" on Statehood remained pending.
BJP legislators objected to the discussion on autonomy in the Assembly and created a ruckus, disrupting proceedings.
The resolution now stands to be sent to the Government of India for its consideration.
