Jan Suraaj leader Anil Yadav shot at in Patna home; Kishor, Tejashwi visit hospital

A Jan Suraaj Party leader and former Patna Municipal Corporation councillor was shot at inside his residence in central Patna on Wednesday evening, police said, leaving him with multiple bullet injuries.

Anil Yadav was attacked in the Buddha Colony police station area. According to Patna SDPO-1 (Law and Order) Krishna Murari Prasad, police were informed of the shooting around 7.30 pm. Yadav, a four-time ward councillor whose wife currently represents Ward No. 24, was sitting in the basement of his apartment when the firing took place.

"Four to five bullets have hit him. Two injuries are on his legs, and one is in the lower abdomen. An attempt is being made to remove the bullet lodged in the abdomen. His condition is stable at present. We are investigating all aspects of the case," Prasad said.

Yadav told police that three men on a motorcycle arrived while he was in the lower basement and opened fire. The identities of the attackers and the motive were not immediately known.

He was first taken to Udayan Hospital on Boring Road and later shifted to Medanta Hospital. Investigators have begun examining CCTV footage from the scene and nearby areas, and a Forensic Science Laboratory team was deployed to collect evidence.

Jan Suraaj founder and Bankipur MLA Prashant Kishor reached Udayan Hospital and was present when Yadav was moved to Medanta. "Anil Yadav has suffered four bullet injuries. I pray to God that he gets well soon," he said.

Kishor questioned the state government over Bihar's law-and-order situation, asking what its repeated references to protecting the state from "jungle raj" meant if such an attack could occur in Patna. "If this is not jungle raj, then what is it?" he asked, saying the Chief Minister, Home Minister Samrat Choudhary, the police administration and the state's policing system should answer. He alleged that police stations in several places were effectively controlled by liquor and sand mafias and criminals, and questioned the absence of a full-time Director General of Police, saying the DGP was on long leave with another officer holding charge.

Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly and RJD national working president Tejashwi Yadav also visited Medanta to meet Yadav and his family. "Someone shot after entering the house. This is not an ordinary incident. The administration must take complete cognisance of it and whoever is responsible should be given the strictest punishment," he said.

Tejashwi Yadav alleged that the government's concern for Bihar was largely limited to election periods and accused it of allowing caste-based targeting. "If people in Patna are not safe, then where will the people of Bihar be safe?" he said. In a post on X, he alleged that criminals protected by those in power had opened fire inside the apartment and criticised the government's handling of law and order.

Independent MP from Purnea Pappu Yadav also visited Medanta. He noted that the shooting occurred in Mandiri, barely 1.5-2 km from the Chief Minister's residence, and asked how safe ordinary people could feel if armed assailants could enter a home and open fire so close to the seat of government.
