
Japan to Test AI-Powered Satellites for Faster Counterstrike Response
Japan's defence ministry will build AI-equipped test satellites with domestic firms from FY2027, launching them by FY2030 to speed counterstrike decisions.
Japan's Ministry of Defense is moving forward with a plan to develop artificial intelligence-powered test satellites, aiming to significantly reduce the time needed to make counterstrike decisions in a conflict scenario.
The ministry intends to collaborate with Japanese companies to construct these experimental satellites between fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2029. Following their construction, the satellites are scheduled to be launched into orbit in fiscal 2030 or later, where their onboard AI systems will be put through rigorous testing to verify their functionality.
The core objective of this initiative is to leverage AI's rapid data-processing capabilities to automate and accelerate the detection of incoming threats and the subsequent decision-making process for a potential counterstrike. By embedding this technology in space-based assets, Tokyo hopes to create a more responsive and resilient defence architecture.
This project underscores Japan's broader push to modernise its military capabilities and integrate cutting-edge technology into its national security framework, particularly in response to evolving regional security challenges.
