Japan, US Vow Continued Coordination on Currency Markets

Japan's finance minister says Tokyo and Washington remain aligned on FX policy, pledging close communication for orderly markets as the yen rallies.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated on Tuesday that Japan and the United States continue to share a common approach on currency policy, pledging sustained dialogue to maintain orderly foreign exchange movements.

Speaking at a regular press conference, Katayama emphasized that Tokyo's policy position has remained unchanged since the coordinated Japan-U.S. intervention in late July, which was aimed at supporting the yen. Her remarks signal that Japanese authorities remain watchful even as the currency has appreciated sharply in recent sessions.

"Japan will continue to maintain close communication with the U.S. Treasury to ensure orderly market moves," Katayama said, noting that she had engaged with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during recent Group of 20 meetings and other forums.

The yen recently climbed to a seven-month high, driven by shifting trader expectations of faster policy tightening by the Bank of Japan and growing speculation that Japanese investors may repatriate funds. The finance minister's comments underscore the continued vigilance of policymakers in both capitals regarding currency stability.
