Auto Driver's Son From Jaunpur Village Secures KGMU MBBS Seat With 627 In NEET

A young man from a village in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district has secured an MBBS seat at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, after a second attempt at the medical entrance examination.

Prabhat Kumar Yadav, a resident of Devakipur village in Machhlishahr tehsil, scored 627 marks and an All India Rank of 3,864 in NEET UG 2026. The result has brought joy to his family and village, not least to his father, Mahendra Kumar Yadav, who has worked as an auto-rickshaw driver in Mumbai for nearly 25 years.

Mahendra has lived away from his family for about a quarter of a century, staying in a 10x10-foot room in a chawl and sending most of his earnings home to cover household and educational expenses. He grew emotional on learning of his son's admission, having long set aside his own comforts to support his children's studies.

Back in Devakipur, Prabhat lives with his grandfather, Indra Bahadur Yadav, his mother, Bansraji, and his siblings. His grandfather celebrated the news by dancing, and a video of the moment has been widely shared on social media.

Family support and schooling

With his father away in Mumbai, Prabhat's uncle Jitendra Kumar Yadav, a teacher, helped oversee the children's education and academic responsibilities in the village. According to Jitendra, Prabhat studied from Class 1 to 8 at St Joseph's School in Mungra Badshahpur and completed his high school education at City School in the same town, scoring 89.44 per cent in Class 10.

He later moved to Kota to prepare for the medical entrance examination, completing his Class 12 education through private schooling with 83.44 per cent while focusing on NEET.

A second attempt, a better score

Prabhat's first NEET attempt yielded 504 marks and no seat at a government medical college. Rather than give up, he identified the areas that needed work and resumed preparation with greater focus. In his second attempt, he raised his score to 627 marks, enough to secure the KGMU seat.

Financing the Kota preparation was another hurdle. Allen Career Institute offered a fee concession, but the remaining expenses remained difficult for the family, and his maternal uncle, Dayaram Yadav, stepped in with financial support.

KGMU was ranked eighth among medical institutions in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 medical category. Throughout his preparation, Prabhat stayed focused on his studies, supported by his uncle in the village and encouragement from the rest of his family while his father continued driving an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai.
