Jean Smart Wins Fifth Straight Emmy for 'Hacks' at 78th Primetime Awards

Jean Smart continued her run at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night, winning her fifth consecutive trophy for lead actress in a comedy series for her work on "Hacks."

The victory gives Smart eight career Emmys, placing her level with the all-time performer record held by Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Allison Janney also reached the same mark on Monday, joining the group.

Smart's latest win adds another distinction: she becomes the first woman to take best actress honours for every season of a show's run.

The evening's first award went to Kate O'Flynn, who won best supporting actress in a comedy for "Widow's Bay." Stephen Root also picked up a trophy for the same series.

Nineteen awards were presented during the main ceremony at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Dozens of other Emmy winners had already been announced the previous weekend, among them host Mariska Hargitay, who collected two trophies.

Other winners announced during the night included Noah Wyle for "The Pitt," Rhea Seehorn for "Pluribus," Matthew Rhys for "The Beast in Me," Tom Pelphrey for "Task," Allison Janney for "The Diplomat," and "The Traitors" in its category.

The ceremony marked the 78th annual edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards.
