J&K FDA bans 10 ghee batches for being sub-standard, unsafe

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Jammu and Kashmir has issued an order prohibiting the sale, storage, distribution and display of ten identified batches of ghee across the Union Territory. The action follows laboratory analysis that flagged the products as sub-standard, unsafe and misbranded.

The order applies to specific brands and batches named by the regulator, effectively pulling them from the market. Retailers, wholesalers and distributors have been directed to comply with the prohibition, which covers all stages of the supply chain.

Officials said the decision was taken after routine quality checks revealed that the ghee samples did not meet prescribed food safety standards. The classification of the products as unsafe indicates potential health risks to consumers, while the misbranding charge suggests labelling or compositional discrepancies.

The move is part of the FDA's ongoing enforcement drive to ensure that edible oils and dairy products sold in the region conform to legal quality norms. Consumers have been advised to check batch details before purchase and report any suspicious products to the department.
