J&K CM Omar Abdullah Opens First International Film Festival, Pitches State as Filmmaker Hub
CM Omar Abdullah inaugurated the first International Film Festival of J&K, unveiling incentives to make the region a filmmaker-friendly destination.
The first edition of the International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir began on Monday with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the helm of the inaugural ceremony. The event, which runs until September 10, is backed by the Jammu and Kashmir government and the Department of Information and Public Relations.
During the opening, Abdullah honoured several veteran filmmakers, including Ramesh Sippy, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sriram Raghavan, and Santosh Sivan. He used the platform to outline the region's ambitions under its comprehensive Jammu and Kashmir Film Policy.
"We aim to transform J&K from a beautiful location into one of the most filmmaker-friendly destinations," Abdullah said, noting that the policy offers substantial financial subsidies tied to shooting days and local expenditure. These incentives are available to everyone from independent debutants to major global studios.
The Chief Minister also encouraged filmmakers to hire local artists, technicians, and crew members, stressing that productions featuring local talent or highlighting the region's heritage would receive additional benefits. He described cinema as an official industry that generates employment and nurtures young talent.
Addressing national and foreign delegates, Abdullah said, "Carry your piece of J&K back in your hearts. Tell your fellow filmmakers that Jammu and Kashmir is open, safe, vibrant, and eager to welcome your crews."
