Three FIRs after clash between student groups at JNTU Hyderabad
A dispute during Teej festivities at JNTU Hyderabad escalated into a physical clash, hostel violence, and a protest, prompting three police cases.
Hyderabad: A festive evening at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) turned violent on Thursday night, September 3, 2026, when a verbal argument between student groups escalated into physical confrontation, leaving several injured and triggering a protest at the main gate.
The incident began around 9 p.m. when a third-year mechanical engineering student allegedly made objectionable remarks about a female student. Friends of the woman confronted him, and the ensuing argument soon turned physical, according to police.
Tensions reignited after midnight, with students from the Gautami and Manjeera hostels engaging in clashes using sticks and stones. The violence persisted into the early hours of Friday, after which a group of students gathered at the university's main gate, demanding action against the perpetrators.
Police from the KPHB station responded to a Dial-112 emergency call and reached the campus to restore order. In connection with the incident, three cases were registered: one based on the female student's complaint, a counter-case from the opposing group, and a suo motu case for allegedly obstructing police personnel during the protest. Sixteen students were taken into custody, served notices, and subsequently released.
University authorities stated that an internal review committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and recommend disciplinary action against those found responsible.
