Joe diGenova Resigns from Justice Department Post Leading Probe into Trump Foes

Joe diGenova, a close ally of President Donald Trump, has resigned from his position leading a Justice Department investigation into whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against the president, he confirmed on Thursday.

"I did in fact resign," diGenova said, describing his service to Trump and the department as an "honor and a privilege." He declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure.

The resignation comes roughly five months after diGenova was brought back to the Justice Department in April to help oversee the inquiry, which has focused on former government officials who scrutinized Trump over the past decade. The investigation has been loosely defined, and diGenova had previously asked then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to appoint him to the role. He has publicly and repeatedly asserted that Trump was the target of a conspiracy involving the intelligence community.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his exit.

DiGenova's departure introduces fresh uncertainty into an investigation that had recently appeared to gain momentum. New subpoenas have been issued demanding testimony before a federal grand jury in Florida, where the probe is based.

Now 81, diGenova served as the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia during the Reagan administration. His return to the department earlier this year placed him at the center of an effort to establish whether a conspiracy against Trump took shape among former officials who had investigated or criticized him.
