Jon Watts in talks to direct first film of new Skywalker Saga trilogy
Lucasfilm has tapped Jon Watts to direct the first film in a new Skywalker Saga trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, with Daisy Ridley eyed to return as Rey.
The Skywalker Saga is set to continue, with Lucasfilm tapping Jon Watts to direct the opening chapter of a new trilogy, according to a Deadline report. Watts is known for directing the three most recent Spider-Man films — Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home — and co-created the series Skeleton Crew.
The new trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, who co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels and has been developing the project since 2018. Daisy Ridley is reportedly being eyed to reprise her role as Rey, the lead of the most recent trilogy.
The project has not yet been greenlit by Disney, the parent company.
The franchise began with Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1977, followed by The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). The prequel trilogy comprised The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005).
The Skywalker Saga most recently concluded with The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the last of which was led by Ridley's Rey. Since then, the franchise has expanded through films and streaming shows set across the onscreen universe.
The next instalment, Star Wars: Starfighter, is scheduled for a May 28, 2027 premiere.
