Jordan's King Abdullah Tells UNGA Israel's Expansionism Is a Regional Threat
King Abdullah II of Jordan told the UN General Assembly that Israel's expansionist appetite poses a regional threat and is making a viable Palestinian state impossible.
Jordan's King Abdullah II used his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to warn that Israel's expansionist ambitions now extend beyond the Palestinian territories and constitute a danger to the wider region.
Speaking in New York, the monarch said the Israeli government's sense of impunity had reached alarming levels, arguing that it no longer questions whether its actions will carry consequences. That confidence, he suggested, is why the international community should not assume Israel's aims end with Palestine.
"This Israeli government's expansionist appetite is now a regional threat," he said, describing Syria as a warning that the world is choosing not to see.
Abdullah, whose country signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, reflected on his long record of raising the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at the assembly. For decades, he said, he had cautioned against leaving the dispute unresolved, but the international community opted to manage the conflict rather than confront it.
He called for accountability, urging member states to describe the situation plainly as an attempt to erase Palestinian life and to impose a new territorial reality in Gaza.
The King said the facts on the ground are being reshaped through destruction in Gaza and de facto annexation in the West Bank, with what he described as a single objective: making a viable Palestinian state impossible.
Jordan has consistently advocated a negotiated settlement to the conflict and the creation of a Palestinian state.
