Julianne Moore Brings 'The Debut' to Zurich, Receives Golden Icon Award

Julianne Moore and Jesse Eisenberg presented their new comedy, "The Debut," at the Zurich Film Festival on Friday night, where Moore was also honoured with the festival's Golden Icon Award in recognition of a career spanning more than three decades.

The Oscar-winning actor plays Mona Friedman, a suburban housewife who takes a small part at a community theatre and gradually becomes consumed by method acting. Her growing commitment puts her at odds with the production's domineering director, a role filled by Paul Giamatti.

Speaking on the green carpet at the premiere, Moore said the script, written by Eisenberg, was among the finest she had encountered. She described the film as a gift and noted that Eisenberg had drawn on his own experiences, placing them through the perspective of a middle-aged woman.

Eisenberg, who wrote, produces and directs, said he had Moore in mind while writing the part. He described her as a goddess, adding that she exceeded whatever he had imagined during the writing process.

The film, Eisenberg's third feature as director, also features Halle Bailey, Cara Buono, Bernadette Peters and Eisenberg himself. It marks his second collaboration with Moore, following his 2022 directorial debut, "When You Finish Saving the World."

Eisenberg said the story examines the birth of an artist, tracing how Mona moves from nervousness to competence, then confidence, before her sense of self-importance briefly overtakes her, and she ultimately returns to a more balanced place as both an artist and a team player. He also said he wrote a musical element into the film after Moore told him during their earlier project that she loved singing.

"The Debut" is scheduled to reach cinemas in German-speaking Switzerland on January 21, 2027. The Zurich Film Festival continues through October 4.
