Justice Ravindra Ghuge Takes Oath as 45th Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office at a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal.

Justice Ghuge brings extensive judicial experience to his new role. He was elevated as a Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013, and most recently served as its Acting Chief Justice from June 1, 2026.

He succeeds Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, who had been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court following the retirement of former Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on June 20.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Ghuge acknowledged the court's distinguished legacy, describing its tradition of delivering justice without fear or favour and praising the bar's renowned erudition and independence. He likened the bench and bar to the two wheels of a golden chariot of justice, expressing his commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues and the bar to ensure its smooth and fair functioning.

Highlighting the need for modernisation, Justice Ghuge stressed the importance of embracing technology to make courts more accessible and transparent, particularly for marginalised sections of society.
