Justice V. Kameswar Rao sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna High Court

Justice V. Kameswar Rao was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Patna.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and other dignitaries attended the proceedings.

Born on August 7, 1965, Justice Rao graduated with honours in Geography from Delhi University in 1987 and obtained his law degree from the same university in 1990. He was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in March 1991.

During his years in practice, he appeared before the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court and the principal bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal in New Delhi. In 2010, the Delhi High Court designated him a senior advocate.

Justice Rao was elevated as an additional judge on August 17, 2013, and became a permanent judge on March 18, 2015. In June 2024 he was transferred to the Karnataka High Court, where he also served as acting chief justice, before returning to Delhi in July 2025.

His appointment places him at the head of the Patna High Court, the apex judicial body for Bihar.
