Kannur Madrasa Teacher Held for Abuse of Minor, Six Years After Survivor's Disclosure
A madrasa teacher was arrested in Kannur for sexually abusing a boy between 2017 and 2020, after the survivor disclosed the trauma during therapy.
A 45-year-old madrasa teacher has been arrested in Kannur for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor boy, with the case coming to light six years after the incident through the survivor's disclosure during counselling.
The accused, Muhammed Basheer, a native of Tavanur in Malappuram, was taken into custody by Chokli Police and later remanded to Kannur Central Jail. Police said the abuse occurred between 2017 and 2020, when the survivor was between the ages of 11 and 14.
At the time, Basheer was employed as a teacher at a madrasa in Pullukkara near Panur, where he reportedly worked for about eight years before relocating to Malappuram roughly four years ago.
The case surfaced recently when the survivor, now a 20-year-old pursuing a gym trainer course, sought counselling for mental health concerns. During these sessions, he disclosed the sexual abuse he had endured as a child, prompting a formal complaint.
Acting on directions from the Thalassery Assistant Superintendent of Police, officers from Tirur Police took Basheer into custody and handed him over to Chokli Police early Tuesday. His arrest was formally recorded later that morning, and he was produced before the Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court-I, which ordered his judicial remand.
