Kargil Veteran Assaulted With Iron Rod in Gurugram Parking Dispute
A Kargil War veteran was allegedly attacked with an iron rod by a parking attendant in Gurugram, leaving him with head injuries and a fractured elbow.
A retired Indian Air Force officer who served in the 1999 Kargil conflict has alleged that he was attacked with an iron rod by a parking attendant at a commercial complex in Gurugram, leaving him with serious head injuries and a fractured elbow.
Retired Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta, who was part of the Air Force's Operation Safed Sagar team during the Kargil War, was at Magnum Global Park on Thursday night for a family dinner at a restaurant. After dropping his family at the restaurant around 8 pm, he began looking for a parking space.
In his police complaint, Gupta said parking staff directed him to several locations — the valet, the basement and a multilevel facility — before refusing to park his car altogether. While he was attempting to reverse, an attendant allegedly struck his windshield in an apparent attempt to break it.
"When I came out of the car and protested, the attendant brought an iron rod and hit me twice, once on my hand and then on my head. I was drenched in blood," Gupta recounted. He alleged that the accused also threatened to kill him.
Gupta said neither the security personnel nor other parking staff at the spot came to his aid. He dialled the police helpline, but claimed no help arrived for another half hour. A chef eventually intervened and, according to Gupta, saved his life. "The attack was sudden and unprovoked. I couldn't even defend myself," he said.
He was taken to Medanta Hospital, where he underwent surgery to fuse his elbow bone with plates. Gupta has also accused the hospital of submitting a false medico-legal case report that makes no mention of the bleeding or the elbow injury. "I am not getting any support from the police," he added.
In his submission to the police, Gupta has demanded strict action against the accused and an FIR for attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt.
Operation Safed Sagar was the Indian Air Force's campaign in 1999 to dislodge Pakistani intruders from positions across the icy heights of Kargil. A new Netflix series released in August chronicles the air campaign.
