Karnataka charts 66 GW clean-energy roadmap for 2030

Karnataka targets 66 GW installed capacity by 2030, driven by clean energy, storage, and grid investments.

Karnataka has unveiled a decade-long blueprint to expand its installed power capacity from the current 39 GW to 66 GW by 2030, with the additional capacity set to be overwhelmingly green. The roadmap was outlined by Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, at the Bharat Electricity and Indian Utility Week in New Delhi.

Gupta noted that two-thirds of the state's existing power mix already comes from hydro and renewable sources. With electricity demand projected to double over the next ten years—fueled by industrial growth, electric vehicle uptake, and large data centres in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru—the state is preparing its grid for a significant transition.

Karnataka has already implemented a Resource Adequacy Plan approved by the Central Electricity Authority and the state regulator. Key projects include the 2,000 MW Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project and large-scale battery energy storage systems at critical KPTCL substations. The state is also expanding the Pavagada Solar Park, adding wind capacity, and promoting solarisation of agricultural feeders under PM-KUSUM and the Chief Minister Saura Krishi Yojana.

On transmission, KPTCL reports ultra-low losses of under 3% and is building thousands of kilometres of new lines and super-grid substations. The government has assured no curtailment of transmission and timely payments to generators, aiming to attract ₹2–3 lakh crore in private investment over the next four to five years. Reforms to land regulations and project procedures are also underway based on investor feedback.
