Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Put on Hold Amid 100-Day Events, Session

The Congress government in Karnataka is unlikely to fill two vacant Cabinet posts in the immediate future, with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's attention focused on the 100-day celebrations in mid-September and the three-day special legislature session later that month. The session is expected to discuss drought and the Kasturirangan report.
Sources indicate that any expansion would require the party's central leadership to balance several competing demands. These include ensuring representation for women, the Kuruba and Valmiki communities, and addressing the reported discontent of former minister and Vijayanagar legislator M. Krishnappa, a Vokkaliga leader who has allegedly threatened to leave the party.
One vacancy arose after B. Nagendra's resignation amid the Valmiki Corporation scam controversy. The other post has been vacant since the initial expansion, following last-minute confusion over the induction of MLC A.V. Gayatri Shanthegowda. Her candidature is believed to have faced opposition from former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is reportedly backing Byadagi legislator Basavaraj Neelappa Shivannanavar.
Sandur legislator E. Annapoorna, a first-time MLA and wife of Ballari MP E. Tukaram, is being considered a likely candidate to fill the Valmiki quota. Party sources note that her induction would also satisfy the demand for a woman minister. While CM Shivakumar had earlier indicated a woman would be included, he has since suggested the decision could wait.
The possible inclusion of Mr. Krishnappa is being closely watched. Speculation suggests his entry might require a sitting Vokkaliga minister to resign. Efforts to placate him with a party post, such as working president, have reportedly failed. Party sources add that working president roles are also being considered for Mr. Nagendra, whose name is doing the rounds for the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board chairmanship.
Observers note that the momentum for expansion has slowed after the smooth launch of the Shivakumar government. The party is reportedly wary of reigniting internal friction, and the buzz is expected to fade further as legislators shift focus to election mode after the Budget session.
