Karnataka informs SC of compliance with CWMA order on Cauvery release

Karnataka has informed the Supreme Court that it is complying with the direction of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on releasing water to Tamil Nadu. The CWMA, on August 25, had upheld the recommendation of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, which directed Karnataka to ensure a flow of 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for a period of 15 days.
The state's submission was made in response to the apex court's query on the matter. The Supreme Court, while taking note of Karnataka's position, has asked Tamil Nadu to challenge the CWMA decision regarding the release of the backlog of water. The court's observation came as it examined the issue of pending water dues and the schedule of releases.
The development is the latest in the ongoing dispute over the sharing of Cauvery river water between the two states. The CWMA's directive was issued to address the immediate requirements of Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka has now formally communicated its adherence to the prescribed flow schedule.
