Karnataka to Hold Grand Dasara Despite Drought, Says CM Shivakumar

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has firmly ruled out any reduction in the scale of the Mysuru Dasara festivities this year, despite prevailing drought conditions. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on August 29, he underscored the event's significance in attracting tourists and supporting the state's hospitality sector.

"There is no question of scaling down the festivities," he said, adding that Dasara draws visitors and bolsters tourism-related businesses. He called on stakeholders to collaborate with the government and district administration to make the celebrations more appealing, noting that the industry benefits directly from the event and should extend its support.

The Chief Minister revealed that the government is planning several measures to enhance the Dasara procession and give the celebrations a fresh dimension. A meeting to discuss these proposals will be convened shortly. He also mentioned that he has requested participation from the army and air force in the procession, and has asked Film Chamber president and actor Jayamala to bring film personalities aboard a tableau.

Addressing the presentation of folk arts, Mr. Shivakumar said efforts would be made to eliminate duplication. "There should not be multiple teams presenting the same folk art. Members of the same art form should participate as a group rather than in groups of 10 or 20," he explained, adding that he has already communicated this to the Deputy Commissioner and the Department of Kannada and Culture. He also stressed the need for greater discipline during the Jamboo Savari.

On the proposal to include Kambala in the festivities, the Chief Minister said a final decision would be made soon. He dismissed objections that the traditional buffalo race could harm the environment or waste water, asserting that no trees would be cut and no large quantities of water would be used. "Kambala is not a prestige issue for me," he added.

Asked about the chief guest for the inauguration atop Chamundi Hill, Mr. Shivakumar said the government would discuss the matter and announce the name shortly.
