Karnataka proposes new foundation for heritage conservation
Karnataka's tourism department has proposed a new foundation to conserve the state's heritage sites through public-private participation and CSR funding.
The Karnataka Tourism Department has put forward a proposal to establish the Karnataka Heritage and Cultural Foundation (KHCF), a dedicated body to oversee the conservation of the state's historical monuments, archaeological sites, and museums. The proposal, prepared by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, is expected to be placed before the State Cabinet for approval.
Tourism Minister K.J. George said the initiative comes in response to a survey that identified nearly one lakh historical monuments and archaeological sites across 239 taluks of Karnataka. Given the scale of this heritage, the minister noted the need for a sustainable and long-term financial mechanism for their upkeep.
The proposed foundation is designed to build on the success of the state's 'Adopt a Monument' initiative. It aims to create a structured platform for the government, private sector, and the public to collaborate on restoration and infrastructure development projects.
KHCF would also serve as a channel for corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, donations from Non-Resident Indians, and public funding, with an emphasis on transparency in financial management and auditing. The foundation is also expected to develop programmes that connect younger generations with historical monuments, art, and local traditions, moving beyond textbook learning.
Tourism Department Secretary V. Ram Prasath Manohar said the foundation would help create long-term resources for conservation through a shared responsibility between the government and society, ensuring accountability in financial operations.
