Karnataka food safety officials inspected 34 medical college hostel canteens on Aug 27, issuing notices to five and seizing expired items from one.
Food safety authorities in Karnataka carried out a coordinated inspection of canteens and kitchens operating within hostels of government and private medical colleges across the state on August 27. A total of 34 such establishments were covered during the drive.
Officials issued notices to five establishments after observing deficiencies during the checks. In one canteen, inspectors found violations related to labelling and seized 7 kg of expired rava (semolina) and eight litres of expired milk that were stored in the kitchen.
The Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration said legal action is being initiated against the food business operator concerned under the applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and rules. The operator will be produced before the Additional Deputy Commissioner, who serves as the adjudicating authority, for further proceedings.
The inspections are part of the department's ongoing efforts to monitor food safety and hygiene standards in establishments that serve meals to students.
