Karnataka ropes in software experts to fix PDS biometric, server issues
Karnataka's food minister says software professionals and dedicated SIM cards will resolve PDS biometric and server glitches reported during two-month ration distribution.
The Karnataka government has engaged software professionals to resolve recurring technical problems in the Public Distribution System (PDS), including delays in biometric authentication and server failures, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Rizwan Arshad said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Mysuru District Journalists' Association, Arshad said the department is working to build a robust network to prevent future disruptions. He attributed the glitches to the recent distribution of two months' ration in a single cycle, following the Centre's decision to supply foodgrains in advance.
Fair price shops serving a large number of ration card holders faced more difficulties than smaller outlets, the minister noted. A third-party audit of the system is underway, and experts are expected to recommend measures to streamline operations.
Arshad also pointed to network connectivity as a contributing factor. Some fair price shops rely on mobile hotspots, and incoming calls can interrupt the connection mid-transaction. To address this, the department is introducing an e-PoS SIM card system that provides dedicated broadband-speed connectivity to fair price shops, minimising disruptions and ensuring smoother service.
