Karnataka Sets Up SIT to Probe Fraudulent Insurance Claims
Karnataka has constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by an IGP to probe fraudulent insurance claims, acting on Supreme Court directions.
The Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to register and investigate fraudulent claims received by insurance companies, with the Home Department issuing the order on September 22, 2026.
The move follows directions from the Supreme Court in a Special Leave Petition (Civil), which called for the formation of state-level special investigation teams to deal with fraudulent insurance claims.
The SIT will be chaired by an Inspector General of Police. A Superintendent of Police nominated by the CID will serve as a member, along with a Deputy Superintendent of Police and three police inspectors, all nominated by the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP).
The team has jurisdiction across Karnataka and has been declared a police station under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Its investigating officers are authorised to submit final reports before the jurisdictional courts under Section 193 of the BNSS.
The SIT will function under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) at the Police Headquarters in Bengaluru.
All complaints from insurance companies regarding fraudulent claims will be transferred by the DG&IGP to the SIT for investigation. The DG&IGP will also provide officers and staff to the team as and when required.
The government order directs the SIT to thoroughly investigate all such complaints and submit investigation reports to the government without delay through the DG&IGP. The team will periodically report the progress of its investigations to the DG&IGP through the ADGP (Law and Order).
