Karnataka teachers can now use 'Tr' prefix before their names

The Karnataka government has issued an official order permitting school teachers to use the prefix "Tr" before their names, drawing a parallel with the titles "Dr" for doctors and "Prof" for professors. The announcement was made on Teachers' Day.

The order describes the decision as a mark of recognition for the role teachers play in the "progress and educational upliftment of society." It specifically acknowledges their contributions in areas such as guiding students' careers, building confidence, upholding Constitutional values, and nurturing a scientific temper among learners.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had earlier proposed the idea while addressing a public meeting in Kudligi, Vijayanagara district, where he launched the Praja Seva campaign. Speaking on the occasion, he underlined that teachers, alongside soldiers, workers, and farmers, are central to national development. He argued that their work merits the same level of respect as that given to other professionals.

Noting that Karnataka has over 4.5 lakh teachers, the Chief Minister said, "A mother who gives us life and a teacher who gives us education are invaluable and deserve special honour." He also mentioned that the government is working on a proposal to support underprivileged children in rural schools, including a 15% rural reservation, with half of that set aside for students in government-run rural institutions.
