Kartik Aaryan Wins Best Actor at 72nd National Film Awards for 'Chandu Champion'

Kartik Aaryan was conferred the Best Actor award for his performance in 'Chandu Champion' at the 72nd National Film Awards, held on Tuesday at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, Gujarat. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honour in the presence of a large gathering of veteran actors and filmmakers, and the actor expressed his gratitude on receiving the award.

Directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, 'Chandu Champion' recounts the story of a determined athlete. Aaryan plays the lead role in the film, which draws on the life of Murlikant Petkar, India's first Paralympic gold medallist in freestyle swimming. Released in 2024, the film saw the actor undergo a marked physical transformation and intensive training for the part, and his performance drew wide appreciation from audiences and critics.

The ceremony also recognised veteran actor Mammootty, who received a standing ovation after securing his fourth National Award for Best Actor, for his role as Kodumon Potti in Rahul Sadasivan's 'Bramayugam'. The Malayalam film, noted for its black-and-white visuals, was praised for its storytelling and performances.

This year's event was held near the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, marking the first time the National Film Awards ceremony took place outside New Delhi.

In the regional categories, 'Srikanth' was named Best Hindi Film, 'Raayan' took the award for Best Tamil Film, 'Feminichi Fathima' was named Best Malayalam Film, and 'Committee Kurrollu' won Best Telugu Film.
