Kash Patel Returns to Senate Judiciary for Contentious Oversight Hearing

FBI Director Kash Patel is scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday for an oversight hearing, returning to the panel that holds principal jurisdiction over the bureau for the first time since last September.

The Republican-led committee is expected to steer attention toward Patel's work on violent crime, drug trafficking and the administration's broader law enforcement priorities. Democrats, however, are likely to press him on a turbulent period at the bureau, including large-scale dismissals of agents involved in investigations of President Donald Trump, inquiries into figures seen as Trump's political opponents, and a travel schedule that has mixed official duties with personal leisure.

Patel has testified before Congress several times as director, including on the FBI's budget, but Tuesday's session carries added weight given the panel's oversight role. His previous appearance before the committee was marked by sharp and personal clashes with Democrats. At one point, Patel shouted over Senator Adam Schiff of California, calling him an "utter disgrace" and a "coward." Schiff responded that an internet troll could be made FBI director but would remain one.

Similar friction is anticipated this time. The committee's ranking Democrat, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, called in April for Patel's replacement following a magazine article that raised allegations of excessive drinking. Patel responded with a $250 million defamation lawsuit, describing the piece as false and a "malicious hit piece." The publication said it stood by its reporting and would defend itself against what it called a meritless lawsuit.
