Kashmir's Home Chef Contest Serves Up Opportunity for Women

A cooking competition in Srinagar has provided a platform for women home chefs to showcase their culinary talents and explore the possibility of launching their own food ventures. The finale of the 'Home Chef' competition was held at a hotel in the Zakura area on the city's outskirts, featuring a live cooking challenge among six finalists.

The event was organized by Dhara in collaboration with the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Srinagar. Organizers reported that between 400 and 500 people registered for the contest, from which 12 were chosen for the semi-finals before six advanced to the final round. The initiative is designed to give home cooks, particularly women, recognition and guidance on starting food businesses, including cloud kitchens.

Yasin Reshi, a chef and faculty member at IHM Srinagar, explained that the competition was created to offer home cooks a larger stage. He noted that winners would receive prizes, including a scooter and cash awards, but also mentorship on establishing their own ventures. Reshi highlighted the growing preference for home-cooked, hygienic, and organic food, suggesting that such businesses have strong potential in a tourist destination like Srinagar.

Participants echoed the sentiment that the platform is a significant step for women's empowerment. Andleeb, a contestant, said the event offers recognition for women who are often confined to domestic roles. She added that it could also help promote authentic Kashmiri cuisine to tourists. Another participant, Saima Paul, noted the competition's four-year history and its role in building confidence and self-reliance among women. She expressed hope that such efforts would help make Kashmir's culinary heritage known worldwide.

Young contestant Mehak described the platform as a brilliant opportunity for home chefs to gain visibility and learn, potentially leading to ventures like cloud kitchens. The event also aimed to promote Kashmir's culinary traditions and encourage aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, to turn their cooking skills into sustainable businesses. Organizers have indicated that more such competitions will be held in the future under pan-India programmes.
