Kashmir's International Film Festival Opens in Srinagar with 28 Global Films

The International Film Festival of Kashmir opened on Monday at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, bringing a two-day showcase of nearly 28 films from 24 countries, including several Kashmiri productions. The lineup spans diverse subjects, with a focus on attracting younger audiences and fostering a vibrant film culture in the valley.

Organisers said the festival also includes documentaries that highlight challenges faced by ordinary people. Cinema enthusiasts turned out in numbers for the screenings, expressing enthusiasm over the breadth of the programme.

Filmmaker Ali Emran, speaking at the event, described the festival as a significant step for the region. "It is important for Kashmir to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of cinema," he said, noting that the primary purpose of the festival is to bring meaningful and thought-provoking films to audiences. He added that the event has been held for the past 20 years, with this being its sixth edition.

Theatre artist Tahir Najar called for more such festivals in Kashmir, saying they provide a platform for new filmmakers and encourage fresh ideas. "If we want to take our film culture forward, festivals like these are essential," he said.

Noted Kashmiri actor Hassan Javaid, among the distinguished guests, stressed the need for government funding to elevate the festival and support local filmmakers. "Bringing people together and creating an environment where audiences can engage with cinema is a big achievement in itself," he said, adding that financial support would help the industry grow.
