Kenya Incinerates 1,024 kg Meth Haul Seized Off Mombasa Coast
Kenya destroyed 1,024 kg of methamphetamine worth $63 million seized off Mombasa, as officials vowed tougher action against traffickers.
Kenyan authorities on Thursday destroyed more than a tonne of methamphetamine seized in the Indian Ocean, nearly a year after the consignment was intercepted off the coast of Mombasa.
The 1,024-kilogram haul, valued at an estimated $63 million, was fed into a high-temperature kiln and incinerated in the presence of government officials.
Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, who oversaw the destruction, said Kenya was being used both as a transit route and as a destination market for illegal drugs. He warned traffickers that enforcement would be intensified, adding that suspects would be prosecuted and that authorities would move to seize property tied to the trade.
The drugs were recovered on October 25, 2025, when the Kenyan Navy stopped a flagless vessel roughly 630 kilometres off Mombasa. The ship was brought to port under armed escort.
Six Iranian nationals arrested on board are in court facing drug-trafficking charges.
Officials described the seizure of over a ton of methamphetamine as a significant breakthrough in the country's campaign against narcotics. The case has also drawn attention to rising concerns over synthetic drug use along Kenya's coast, where health and law-enforcement agencies have reported growing problems involving methamphetamine and heroin.
